About 250, 000 people of 60,000 families in Gampaha, Colombo and Kalutara districts got affected in the heavy rain experienced for the first time in 19 years.
A record of 440 mm rain was recorded in the city. Many streets were under water. Floodwater was running from 3-4’ above the road level. Many could not get out of the houses they live to go to safe places.
Due to the biggest ever rain fall Colombo had for the last 18 years, half of Colombo was under water by yesterday morning.
The Speaker yesterday had to limit the parliamentary session to just 8 minutes and the Parliamentary complex and surrounding areas have been flooded.
However supplementary budget for Rs. 15,000 million and some legislation under the Special Trade Goods Tax Bill were also passed in this brief gathering.
The heavy rains day before yesterday night some parts of the female ward of the Welikada prison was flooded and the detainees were making a lot of noise that night as they had no place to stay.
Meanwhile 55 year old female prisoner has also died the same night and the prison authorities said that she died of natural causes.
