57 years ago, that is in 1957 the movie “The bridge on the River Kwai
was filmed in Sri Lanka by the local river “Kelani”.Winner of 7 academy
awards, this movie was based on 2nd world war in Thaland. The.The usual
river which is in Thailand is “Mae Klong “ but after the movie was
released the original river became The River Kwai.
Today the River in Sri Lanka “Kelani” is a famous tourist and locals attraction for White water rafting.
The existing ruins of the blasted bridge also a main feature for the visitor’s attention. The Sri Lanka government has decided to build a hydro power station by crossing the river by a dam which resulting dropping of water levels in the river. That means the water rafting activity will directly effect and rural income will drop drastically.
The next stage is to re build the Bridge as it was in 1957 in the same location by the Electricity Board and expecting to drag the tourist attraction again. But the local society think that tourist attraction is hundred times more to have the non existing bridge with ruins than the new bridge across the river.
